<p>First off, I saw one woman riding a recumbent bike in what seemed like slow motion, while leisurely reading a magazine. I also saw a gentleman lifting weights with poor form. But those two paled in comparison to the lady who was standing still – yes, stationary, immobile, motionless – on a treadmill watching TV. It got me thinking that these are the people who actually feel like they should hit the gym (a plus), but they’re also the people who need the a lot of guidance and what is more, they are the ones who exclaim “but I can’t afford to have a <strong><a  href="http://www.earthfittraining.com/2011/10/28/4-reasons-to-hire-a-personal-trainer/" target="_blank">Beaufort personal trainer</a></strong>!”</p>

<p>Most women would never consider altering their workout and nutrition strategies as they age but they definitely should. Sure, there will always be the core foundations of body composition change with eating clean, doing resistance training and aerobic exercise regardless of age. However, as you experience hormonal fluctuations with age you can adjust both your diet and exercise to help better suit your needs.</p>
<p>When you’re younger it’s much easier to maintain optimal hormonal balances. You’re far less prone to seeing decreased levels of testosterone, growth hormone, thyroid, etc, even if you’re not doing resistance training and following a good diet. This is exactly why a woman may get away with a diet of sodas and potato chips in their twenties and still maintain her shape. But as she ages and starts to lose lean muscle tissue from not doing resistance training and following calorie restrictive diets, hermetabolism is going to begin slowing down. Insulin sensitivity decreases at the same time with the combination of factors leading to more being fat stored around the hips and midsection.</p>
<p>Sometimes the process is slow with a few pounds gained each year, other times it’s more rapid. But sooner or later the old ways stop working and you won’t like what you see in the mirror. Ladies you need to stop starving yourself and trying to do hours of cardio to get your body back. It’s not going to work like it once did. You’re going to want to take a different approach or you’re likely to be left disappointed.</p>

<p>As a certified <a  href="http://www.shapingconcepts.com/">Charleston personal trainer</a> that specializes in body transformations for middle-aged men and women, I’ve found a particular form of exercise to be superior for this age group. It’s called burst training. What exactly is burst training you ask? It’s simply doing short bursts of all-out effort followed by brief recovery periods in your workouts. Unlike traditional health club workouts you’re not doing several sets of a particular exercise with a minute or two of rest between each set. With burst training you might set up 5-8 different exercises and move from one to the next with minimal rest.</p>
<p>The idea is to create an overload stimulus with your central nervous system so you release adrenaline and nor-adrenaline. These are powerful fat burning hormones released by the adrenals in part ofthe “fight or flight” primal response mechanism. By doing resistance training workouts in this fashion you also help to boost testosterone and growth hormone levels. Combined with a supportive nutrition diet and cardiovascular exercise, you’ve got a formula for stabilizing hormonal balances and shedding unwanted body fat.</p>

<p>The cardiovascular exercise version of burst training is called interval training. It works in the same wayby doing short bursts of all-out effort followed by brief recovery periods. I’ve found the best results when a program combines a variety of training methods working all the energy systems. In other words,the person does a little bit of everything. It’s not just burst or interval training, but a combination ofthese methods with lower intensity, longer duration aerobic workouts.</p>
<p>An example of a training routine for one of my clients may include 2-3 days of burst and interval trainingwith the other 2-3 days being lower-intensity, longer duration aerobic workouts. This helps to avoid over-training while also allowing the individual to work all the energy systems.</p>
